Statement of Need
The incidence of obesity in the United States has risen to an alarming level. Chronic and co-morbid medical conditions, like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease are all more prevalent in obese patients. The most recent data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007-2008 showed overall prevalence for people overweight and obese combined (BMI >25) was 68%.

However, research has shown that physicians and other health care professionals do not have the necessary tools and education to assist patients in this demographic. Physicians are unaware of the latest scientific findings on the impact of being overweight and therefore not well prepared to advise their patients about the health implications or the use of diet and lifestyle modification as a treatment strategy in the management of weight related health issues.

The goal of this course is to teach health professionals the effects of obesity on human health and strategies in evaluating and treating patients who are overweight or obese. At the conclusion of this course, attendees should be able to identify, diagnose and treat medical conditions that may be affected by being overweight or obese.

Target Audience
The conference is designed for physicians; other interested healthcare professionals are encouraged to attend.
